First of congratulations to the best all-around baseball player in the game, Carlos Zambrano, on his no-hitter Sunday night.
The numbers for Zambrano: 110 pitches, 10 strikeouts, 1 walk, 1 hit batter, zero runs and zero hits allowed.
It has been 36 years since a Cubs pitcher has thrown a no-hitter, it was Milt Pappas in September of 1972 - a fact that Zambrano himself was well aware of. In a post-game interview with Cubs broadcasters Bob Brenley and Len Casper, Zambrano noted that at the Cubs Convention every year in January, the former Cubbie pitcher Pappas always tells Zambrano that he'll be next. Finally, on Sunday night, Big Z proved Pappas right.
In recognition of Carlos Zambrano's achievement, Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich declared September 16, 2008 "Carlos Zambrano Day".
We here at The Stonecipher Report encourage everyone to enjoy Carlos Zambrano Day not just this year, but in years to come, and in honor of Big Z, don't forget to yell at and berate an umpire. Don't worry, they're jerks - all of them, it's ok.
