I’ve been following this topic a little bit – mostly through a few Texan friends (one in education, in particular) who are shocked by the rampant stupidity behind all of this,..but I hadn’t written about it out here yet…
And, as it turns out, fair enough – because I doubt I could’ve done any better job at it than my hero and writing / thinking mentor Roger Ebert did when he took it on in his blog column the other day. Titled "The Texas School Book Repository" (and available via this link), his piece launches right in with the questions, "Do the schoolbook publishers of America have standards? Courage? Ethics? In what sense do they stand behind their product? For "product" they sometimes produce, and not textbooks in the traditional sense. I ask these questions for a reason…"
