My Letter to Rick Davis RE: The Obama Fan Club

A couple of days ago, along with hundreds and hundreds of John McCain supporters who actually know how to use the Internet, I received an email from Mr. McCain's campaign manager Rick Davis (Yes, I subscribe to McCain's email alerts so I can stay on top of the latest GOP/McCain plans to attack Barack Obama). In the email was a link to the copyright violating ad which the McCain team recently put together called "Fan Club".
Amazingly this is the McCain Campaign's plan of attack. Since there are no more Rev. Wright's left and we're not quite due for that re-run yet) the Republicans have weirdly chosen to attack Obama for being popular. I have questioned the wisdom of Rick Davis before here at TSR, but this is getting more and more absurd.
Many of the ads McCain is running don't actually say anything bad about Barack Obama. They just have clips of people saying good things about Obama along with a sarcastic or ominous voice-over and one line at the end which asks "is he ready to lead?" Supposedly that makes it an attack ad, but it still is just strange.
At least in "Fan Club", which you'll see below, they did throw in a lie about Obama, but then went right back to into a bunch of clips of people talking about how great he is.
Anyhow, rather than just writing a post about what a bad job Rick Davis is doing I decided to tell him directly via a sarcastic email asking him for the link, or some sort of contact information, so that I can join the Barack Obama Fan Club discussed in the ad. While it is not nearly as funny as a drunken email to the DNC, I thought all of you might enjoy reading it.
But first, here is the ad being discussed:
And now, without further ado, here is the exact email I sent to Rick Davis:
Dear Mr. Davis,
I wanted to say thank you for alerting me about the Barack Obama Fan Club. When I opened my mailbox recently and found an email from you entitled “Obama Fan Club” I was excited. You see, my friend, I am a big fan of Senator Obama’s and until now I was unaware that such a fan club existed and I would like to join.
After watching the commercial for the B.O.F.C. I became even more excited, especially during the part about the higher taxes. I have heard a lot of really reputable people say that your ad is lying about this issue, but as a person who makes much less than $42,000 a year, I am not concerned about your lack of honesty on this minor issue, but I am excited about the possibility of living in an America, where even I can dream of reaching a higher tax bracket.
Along these lines, as a person employed in the food service industry I was thrilled to hear that Taco Bell employee in the ad saying that Mr. Obama has the ability to make a restaurant busy again. And if that’s just during campaign season, imagine what good news that could be for me once he’s actually the president
The ad also mentioned what a rock star Barack Obama is and compared him to The Beatles, Elvis and Bono. I totally agree with all of those comparisons. How cool would it be to have a celebrity of such magnitude, who the rest of the world loved and respected as our next president? Seriously, think of how much better off we’ll be when other world leaders trust us and respect us again. Diplomacy and full restaurants may be considered passe these days, but I, for one, believe that they’re on the verge of coming back. We’ll see. Keep your fingers crossed.
This whole thing, Mr. Davis, is so exciting. In fact, I can hardly keep from jumping for joy even as I write you this letter. The only problem is that in your email to me, you never offered me a link or even any contact information for the Barack Obama Fan Club. I assume that in your excitement you simply forgot to ad the link for me, but I really would like to check out this club and learn a lot more. I know you’re a busy guy these days, but your ability to make John McCain look bad during the past few months has displayed your commitment to helping elect Barack Obama as the next President of the United States, so please reply ASAP with a link to the B.O.F.C.
Thanks Rick,
Stonecipher
As of this writing it has been more than 36 hours since I sent the above letter and I have yet to receive a response. If and when I do, I will post here at TSR, so stay tuned. As a side note, I have not received any other emails from Rick Davis or the McCain Campaign. So maybe someone over there did actually read my letter and remove me from the list.
